  Chapter One

“It’s a damn good thing I’m not too tall,” Kendra McIntyre muttered softly to herself as she untangled her body from the sleeping bag on the backseat of her old car. She peeked out the rear window through one bleary eye, pleased to see no people around but quite a few cars scattered about the cinema parking lot.

She sat up, slipping her shoes on, then brushed her hair and tied it up in a ponytail. Now to find a place where she could shower and change her underwear. The first three days after she’d been thrown out of her apartment because her roommate wanted her boyfriend to move in, Kendra had used a free trial gym membership pass. That was awesome because not only did she get to try out all the equipment, and use their showers, but also if she went early enough in the morning, she got a free breakfast as well.

The next two days she’d visited various malls, but washing there was problematic as there were too many people and no shower stalls. She’d ended up filling her water bottle with hot water, stealing the soap from the sink, and trying to wash in a toilet stall. Today she planned to try out the local swimming pool. For a start, it opened at six a.m., so she figured she could spend plenty of time in the showers and wash her hair as well.

Her car was almost out of gas, and her bank account was almost empty, but she’d have to put ten dollars of fuel in her car if she was to continue job hunting. The problem was everyone wanted fifteen-year-olds to do the type of jobs she was looking for—retail and hospitality. She still had two more funeral homes to apply to for a job as a professional mourner though. She was positive that being in her midtwenties would be better than being a teenager for those positions. Besides, funerals almost always had coffee and something to eat after them, and her food budget was even lower on her priority list than her gas budget.

Her panties and bra were still a little damp. She’d washed them out the night before and laid them on a towel on the dashboard of her car, but they weren’t dry enough to wear. Still, she couldn’t leave them there in daylight. Hopefully, there’d be hot air blowers at the swimming pool and she could finish drying them then.

She set her cell phone to recharge as soon as she turned her car engine on. Every time she saw an electrical outlet, she plugged her cell phone in, but it was never long enough to recharge it fully. However, it still had two bars, so it should last long enough to answer a call about a job. If she was offered one. Certainly she wouldn’t be using it to call anyone herself. There was no budget for that.

Dammit, she needed a job right now. Then she could get an apartment. Then, possibly even a life. She grinned at herself. Yeah sure. Men would fall all over themselves to date her. Like hell they would. She was at least ten pounds overweight, her hips needed trimming, and so did her hair. She sighed. No budget for a hairstylist either.

But being ordinary had worked for a long time in her last job. She’d been a mystery shopper for almost a year. Way longer than anyone her supervisor had known of before. She’d go to various stores and buy goods as instructed, then report back on service, quality of the goods and so on. And she got to keep whatever she’d been ordered to buy. In fact, most of the stuff she sold on Ebay as fast as she could. It hadn’t paid much, but it was a livable system. If she’d owned more clothes, had her hair cut and dyed a different color, she may have even lasted longer. She’d tried wearing plain ey
eglasses, that’d helped a bit, but she’d cycled through her outfits one too many times and been recognized, and that was the end of her job.

At least all she needed to be a professional mourner was a black skirt, black shirt, and black shoes, which she owned. She even had a pretty white lace handkerchief that had belonged to her mother. She could so ace this job. All she needed to do was convince some funeral home to hire her. Well, first a trip to the swimming pool. Swim a few laps, shower, and wash her hair. Dry her underwear using the hand drier, then dress in her black outfit to go get a job. Easy peasy.

  * * * *

Kendra swam up and down the slow lane, loving the feel of the water flowing over her skin, her arms and legs moving smoothly as they should. It’d been ages since she’d been swimming. Years. She’d almost forgotten how much she used to enjoy the sport. She was so glad she’d kept the swimming costume she’d bought as a secret shopper. She’d thought about selling it, but it fit her perfectly, and the colors suited her, sunshine yellow with orange highlights.

Resignedly she climbed out of the pool and headed for the change rooms. This place was huge. Ginormous. There was a diving pool, with an Olympic-standard platform as well as springboards. She’d love to try out the ten-meter platform one day. There was a kids’ pool, a warm water hydrotherapy pool, and a wave pool. Oh wow. She wouldn’t mind trying that out either. Pretending to be in the ocean while actually at a swimming pool would be awesome fun. She’d never been surfing before. She craned her head around as she walked toward the change rooms. There was a sauna and a hot tub down there, too.

Realistically however, she couldn’t afford to keep paying basically for a shower. She needed to find somewhere free to get clean each day. Sighing again, she stood under the shower, relishing the hot water flowing over her after two days of trying to wash in a tiny amount of water. Sadly, there was no free shampoo, but she still had some of her own, so used it, rinsed, and then put conditioner on her hair while she washed out her swimsuit.

Using the hand dryer, she dried first her half-dry underwear, then her hair, before dressing in the black outfit and sitting on the bench to brush out her hair. She left the hand dryer blowing hot air over her swimwear and towel, hoping they’d dry off at least a little while she was there.

Fortunately no one paid any attention to her. This early in the morning, most people were keen swimmers who completed their laps then raced off to work. She wished she had a job to rush off to. Or even a home to go to tonight. Quit with the pity party, Kendra. Today is the day you get a new job.

“Oh my God, did you see her giving him the finger. That was hysterical.”

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for months. But I bet he just fired her.”

“Well of course. She’s the most useless receptionist ever. If you ask her to do something, it never gets done. But I love the way she responded.”

A receptionist? Answering phones, taking messages, likely some typing? I did that once. I could do it again! She turned to the two women who’d just walked into the change rooms.

“Excuse me. I’m looking to change jobs, and I’m a receptionist. Which company is hiring?” Well it’s not really a lie. Or not a very big one anyway.

  “Why right here, honey.”

“But you have to understand, Osborne’s a retired swimmer. He won’t tolerate people taking it easy on his dollar,” added the other woman.

“That’s okay. I’m used to working hard,” Kendra said.

  “Good luck then, honey.”

Quickly Kendra did her hair in a high twist then gathered together her possessions. Holding her spine straight, she walked out into the hallway and up to the entry to the building. The most luscious backside she’d ever seen was taping a notice to the glass door. Well, there was a man attached to the ass, but she was too busy salivating at his butt to notice the rest of him. When he straightened up and turned around though, she had to stop herself from drooling. The man was built. Broad shoulders, muscular arms, and a chest made for licking, stretching a tight T-shirt in the swimming pool colors, royal blue and gold. Wow. He could swim in her pool any time he liked.

Dragging her mind above her waist, Kendra put on her most professional smile. “I hear you’re looking for a new receptionist. I’m here to apply for the position. Can you please direct me to the manager’s office?”

“How did you hear? It only happened ten minutes ago.”

“Networking.” She smiled back at the scowling, but oh-so-yummy, male.

His gaze flicked down to the bag she held with her towel and things in it. “Change room gossip. Very well, follow me.”

She would have liked to watch his ass and thigh muscles as he walked ahead of her but forced herself to notice where they were going. After all, she wanted to be able to find her way back again. The man almost ran up a flight of stairs beside the gym then turned down a corridor. Hoping this wasn’t a fitness test, and also hoping she wasn’t going to end up panting, she raced after him.

He walked through what appeared to be a receptionist’s office and into an inner sanctum. There was a glass wall looking out over the main swimming pool, with the diving boards in the distance, the wave pool on the right, and the children’s pool on the left.

“What a spectacular view,” she said. Then realized Mr. Delicious Ass must be the manager. Oops. Likely this was the Osborne man the women were talking about. Yep, those shoulders were a swimmer’s shoulders. She could tell now she was using her brain instead of her hormones.

He sat behind a large desk piled high with papers and waved her to a chair. “So you’re a receptionist?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said. Then figured it was probably time to be slightly more factual. “I’ve done reception work in the past.”

“Well, what are you doing at the moment?”

Kendra figured “Talking to you” wasn’t the kind of answer he wanted to hear. “Most recently I’ve been working as a secret shopper for a marketing firm. But my face is becoming known, which means that the position is coming to an end.”

“Or has already come to an end,” he guessed shrewdly.

  “Yes,” she sighed.

“Can you really do reception? Juggle a line of waiting customers, the phone calls, and staff rosters all at once?”

Kendra smiled. She knew she could. “Yes,” she said confidently.

“Okay, you can start right now on a week’s trial at eight dollars an hour. At the end of the week we’ll talk rates and superannuation and so on, if we’re happy with you.”

“Thank you.” Kendra’s heart was beating double time. She had a job! A job! Just like that. And she’d make damn sure she passed the trial week and kept it, too.

  Chapter Two

“I see you fired another receptionist. You’re going through them rather fast these days.”

“Oh, shit. I forgot to take the sign off the door.”

Jordan held the sign up. “I took it down myself after I met the new receptionist.” He jerked his head in the direction of the outer office.

Osborne smiled at his partner. Partner in the bedroom and in the office. Jordan was the financial brain behind the Aquatic Center. It was Jordan who made sure all the figures added up to a nice, fat, black balance sheet. Osborne had all the ideas. He knew what swimmers wanted, both those who swam for fun, and those who wanted to train professionally. He’d made good and sure his Aquatic Center had everything the professionals wanted onsite. They didn’t have to leave his building for anything. Physiotherapist, sports dietician, personal trainers, masseurs, they all worked from here and were all trained to know the differing needs of sprint swimmers, distance swimmers, and divers.

Then there was the fun stuff to ensure the families kept coming back again and again. The wave pool and diving boards for the teenagers. A fun pool for the little kids, and inflatable waterslides and jumping castles in the main pool from four to seven p.m. every night, and all day weekends and holidays. Plus his personal brainchild, t
he huge water tunnel that ran all around the building starting right up high under the roof, and gradually dipping down as it went around the walls, to splash down in a separate pool. It was called a waterslide, but it was completely enclosed so no kid could fall out of it, and it was constantly sloping down, so once a rider started on the journey, the angle, plus the water pouring through it, ensured they arrived safely at the end.

Osborne smiled at Jordan. God he loved this man. Tall, thin, and fair, Jordan was everything he wasn’t, and together they made the most amazing love. As well as the Aquatic Center of course.

“Tell me about the new chick,” asked Jordan.

“She used to be a receptionist. Has been working as a secret shopper. Asked for the job not ten minutes after I fired the previous one,” said Osborne.

  “Do you fancy her?”

Osborne thought for a minute. He hadn’t spent any time thinking of her like that, but she did appeal to him. Especially after the previous woman who was lazy and argumentative. Of course, this one might turn out to be both those things, too. “She doesn’t turn me off. But let’s wait and see if she’s any good at the job. As you so thoughtfully pointed out, we’ve had rather a lot of receptionists in the past few months. If this one’s any good, I’d like to keep her.”

“Is that why you don’t bother to remember their names? Because you think they’ll be gone real soon.”

Was it? He’d never thought of it like that before. He supposed…Well, maybe…“Okay, I’ll ask her name and try to remember it.”
