Fireworks at the Lake

  Fireworks at the Lake

  by Berengaria Brown

  Chapter One

Andrew had spent most of the afternoon trying not to stare at the blond Viking stretched out on a lawn chair with the ripples from the lake running up and over his toes. The blond had removed his T-shirt and placed his Stetson over his face, but not before Andrew had seen the intense blue of his eyes and the sharp ridge of his nose. Since then Andrew had spent his time appreciating the Viking’s muscled arms and shoulders, his ripped abs and the long, long line of his legs - right down to the toes currently buried under an inch of water. Long, narrow toes, a fitting ending to the long, lean legs that disappeared inside baggy, knee-length shorts.

Likely his view of the Viking was going to be the most exciting part of his Fourth of July weekend this year. Still life wasn’t too bad. In fact, it could have been a hell of a lot worse. A bunch of the people from the office had planned to spend the day at a cook-out in a city park. Andrew didn’t mind working with them, but he wasn’t ready to spend his vacation days with them as well, which was why he’d decided to come here to the lake for the three-day Fourth of July weekend.

Originally he’d planned to stay on the shore until the nine o’clock “family” fireworks display, then head back into the small tourist town for a meal before the midnight lakeside fireworks. But now his plans were liable to change. If the Viking stayed here, he’d stay. If the Viking went off with friends that would be the end of his happy thoughts of getting to know the man. The only problem was, he hadn’t quite worked out how to get to know the blond yet.

Part of Andrew wanted to just sit and wait. The Viking had been lying here for a couple of hours already, and unless he planned to get quite wet, he’d have to move his lawn chair soon, as the tide was coming in. Likely when he stood up, Andrew could catch his gaze and say hello. Or something. On the other hand, it seemed rude to keep staring -- or pretending not to stare -- and not speak. But then, perhaps it would be safer to do nothing at all and just wait and watch. So Andrew waited and watched and tried to make up his mind what to do. Part of the problem was that his relationship with Rory had damaged his self-confidence.

He’d loved Rory passionately, far more passionately than Rory had ever loved him. Andrew had wanted them to live together, to settle down, to be a real couple, but Rory had never agreed to that. Gradually Andrew had realized that they were drifting apart, no matter how hard he’d tried to keep them together. Finally he’d understood that although Rory had been the man for him, he couldn’t fulfill Rory. After that had come a time of intense pain and anguish. A time when he’d wondered if he’d ever be enough to make another man happy. But that was all a year ago now, and Andrew was ready to try again. But only with someone who at least thought he might be able to love Andrew back.

Andrew stared at the Viking. He knew nothing about this man except that the blond was delicious eye-candy. However, something strong and powerful drew him to the Viking. Could this be his chance at happiness? Or would it be just another Rory who couldn’t return his love?

Luke had felt the man’s gaze on him almost from the moment he’d settled his lawn chair on the sand. Very gradually he’d turned his hat around so he could see sideways and get a better look at the watcher. Brown hair with a tendency to curl at the ends. Taller than his own six-foot-even. Still fully clothed even in the hot sunshine on the lakeshore. Now that was interesting. The watcher didn’t seem to have unusually pale skin, although a man’s arms could easily be tanned and his chest white, of course. But somehow Luke didn’t think his watcher was worried about sunburn. No, he guessed the man had kept his shirt on for another reason. What could it be? Scars from surgery or an accident? Lack of self-esteem?

Moving slightly to the left, Luke tilted the Stetson a little higher to get a better view of the brown-haired man. He was thin but not skinny. His shoulders were broad and in proportion to his height. His hips were lean and narrow. No, nothing wrong with his physique.

A wave splashed up Luke’s leg, wetting his knee. Okay the tide was definitely coming in. It was time to move. He’d use it as an opportunity to speak to the watcher, to listen to what kind of voice he had, maybe get a good conversation going and find out something about him as a person.

Luke sat up straight and put his hat back on his head, then stood and folded his chair. Purposefully he stretched to his full height, looking all around as he did so. The watcher was looking down at the sand. Luke willed him to look up, and he did. Big brown eyes and a wide mouth that smiled at him. Luke smiled back.

  “Hey there. Name’s Luke.”

  “Andrew.”

“Do you live here, or are you just here for the Fourth?”

“Neither. I’m here for the three-day holiday weekend. Back to work on Monday.”

He had a nice voice. Light, but not immature. Easy on the ears. Luke could get used to hearing that voice whispering in his ear as they played naughty bedroom games. His eyes gleamed and sparkled in the sunlight as if he was happy to talk to Luke. That was positive. “Me, too. Also, I’m starving. Want to come grab some food with me?”

“Sure. There’s not much choice, though, unless you want to get dressed up and go to the restaurant at the resort. It’s pretty much either hot dogs or pizza.”

“Pizza sounds good to me. How about you?”

Luke was almost blinded by the dazzling smile his watcher -- Andrew -- gave him. “Pizza is fine by me.”

“Come on then.” Luke shoved his feet into sandals, slung his lawn chair over his shoulder, and side by side they walked across the narrow band of sand, then up over a grassy area back to the parking lot. He stopped beside his car to drop the chair in the trunk, then they turned right into the heart of the town. Well, “heart” wasn’t the correct word. Main Street wasn’t even a half mile long. There was a general store, a post office, an ice cream store that also sold books and magazines, the pizza place, and not much else. Even though it was mid-afternoon, the pizza store was still crowded. They ordered their pizzas, were given paper tickets, and told “twenty minutes.”

“Let’s wait outside. It’s very noisy in here,” suggested Andrew.

“Yeah. We can come back in fifteen minutes which should be heaps of time.” They crossed the road back toward the lakeside, and Luke dropped down to sit on the grass. He’d been sitting for hours, but he wanted Andrew to relax, and standing together in the center of a patch of grass would look odd, whereas sitting and talking should look like a normal couple on vacation.

“My family came here a few times when I was a kid. I wanted to see if it’d changed,” Luke said.

  “And has it?”

  “Nup.”

“That’s amazing. Everything changes so fast these days. I’m surprised you even recognize the place.”

Luke nodded at Andrew. “I know. In some ways it’s weird. I walked down to the lake today and put my lawn chair just exactly where my mom always used to put hers. I didn’t even notice I was doing it until after I was sitting down. It’s surprising how powerful old habits become.”

“Habits. I suppose the good ones, it’s smart to copy them. It’s just knowing which are the bad ones that we should get rid of.”

Wow. Sounds like he’s been hurt in a relationship. That was a perceptive comment indeed. Is that why he keeps his shirt on? Has someone told him he’s too skinny? Luke held his breath for a moment. Was this his opportunity to take the conversation deeper, to find out what really mattered to Andrew, or was it much too soon? They hadn’t even known each other an hour yet. But if he wasted the opportunity, who knew if he’d ever get such a perfe
ct opening again? Hoping he wasn’t risking everything, Luke said, “I think we all have areas of our past that we’d like to make over. But that’s not the way it works. What we can do, though, is choose to learn from our mistakes and step out in confidence that the future is ours if we’re willing to take it.”

“You’re right. So let’s do that. Are you here alone this weekend?”

“Not anymore. I’m planning to spend the weekend with you.” And once again, Luke was almost blinded by the brilliance of Andrew’s smile.

Andrew jumped to his feet. “So let’s get our pizzas and plan what comes next.”

  Chapter Two

Andrew knew this couldn’t be anything more than a weekend romance, hardly more than a one-night stand really, but he didn’t care. He hadn’t been this happy in a long time. He and Luke had talked and laughed for hours, long after the last of their pizza had gone cold and their iced tea warm.

Together they sat on the grass and watched as the first lot of fireworks burst in colorful and noisy splendor over the lake. All around them, children screamed with delight and lovers entwined their bodies and kissed. Andrew would have liked Luke to kiss him as well, but although they’d spent hours talking, he wasn’t sure whether they were quite ready for that step as yet.

Afterward, they walked through the crowds and bought chili dogs from the hot dog vendor, then ice creams from the bookstore. “What kind of a bookstore sells ice cream?” asked Andrew in confusion.

“The kind that wants to make money, I guess.” Luke laughed.

When Luke laughed his whole body laughed with him. His shoulders and chest wiggled in happiness and his blue eyes sparkled while his eyebrows rose up and then went down again. He was truly the most attractive man Andrew had ever known and Andrew wanted to spend the night with him desperately. He was almost certain that was the plan, but no one had actually said anything about it yet.

He’d booked a room in the town’s only hotel, but it was a very ordinary room. Still, it was private and had a bed and a bathroom. Of course if Luke was staying somewhere nicer that would be even better.

It was getting late, but the main fireworks display wasn’t until midnight, which was quite a while yet. Andrew wanted to suggest they go somewhere alone for a while, but wasn’t sure how to do it.

Luke must have read his mind because he said, “Let’s go for a drive up to the headland. As kids, we watched the fireworks from there once and had a fantastic view with only a fraction of the number of people around. It might be a lot more private. At least we could check it out. We’ll still have time to come back if it’s just as crowded.”

“Going for a drive to the headland would be nice anyway. Let’s do that.”

Andrew settled himself in the passenger seat as Luke pulled his car out onto the still-crowded Main Street. People were walking anywhere on the road as if it were a sidewalk, with no regard to the possibility of a car coming by. But Luke didn’t seem worried. He drove very slowly, letting everyone take as long as they wanted, and finally they were through the crowds and heading out of town up the hill. It wasn’t all that big a hill, and there wasn’t much of a lookout either, but most visitors walked up there at least once while they were staying at the lake.

They stopped briefly at the lookout and saw several carloads of young people who had evidently settled there to watch the fireworks. Luke just nodded at Andrew and they drove on around the hill and over the other side, then almost all the way down again, winding their way to the far side of the lake. When they reached the headland, there were a few groups of people right on the shoreline, including a party surrounding a large bonfire. Luke backtracked a little and parked beside a small grassy bowl of land that backed against the rocky headland. They had an excellent view across the lake to the fireworks and best of all, no one else was there at all. Of course, other people might arrive before midnight, but right now it was theirs and theirs alone.

Andrew’s heart beat faster and his dick hardened. Actually his dick had been hard most of the time since he’d first seen Luke, but it was really hard now. Hard with hope and expectation. Surely Luke wouldn’t have come here just to watch the fireworks. His Viking had to feel as he did, that they needed to touch and kiss each other.

Luke popped the trunk and pulled out a thick blanket, which he laid on the grass so their backs were to the rocky windbreak. Then he lay down full length and opened his arms.”Let me kiss you.”

Andrew felt a huge weight fall from his shoulders. Luke did want him. He wasn’t mistaking the signs. It wasn’t just his own hopes and desires. Luke reciprocated them. So what if it was only tonight? At least they would have this one night together.

Andrew dropped to his knees and ran his hands over Luke’s pelvis. When he touched the other man’s dick, he knew he was right. It was an enormous, thick length. Andrew couldn’t resist teasing a little, stroking it through Luke’s baggy shorts, before slipping his hand under the waist elastic and over Luke’s flat belly to touch heaven. Heaven was hot and hard with a head damp from pre-come. Andrew couldn’t have asked for anything better.

He tugged Luke’s shorts down his legs and off over his sandaled feet, glad they were baggy enough he didn’t have to stop and take off the other man’s footwear. Andrew dropped between Luke spread legs, licking the head of Luke’s cock and then sucking the tip into his mouth.

“You taste so good.” Andrew crawled up higher on Luke’s body, then Luke pulled him the last few inches and thrust his tongue into Andrew’s mouth. The moment Luke’s tongue possessed him, Andrew’s bones melted and he was unable to think anymore. He could hardly even breathe as they kissed and kissed, their tongues dancing and tangling and Luke’s flavor still seared into his brain.

Then Luke was unzipping Andrew’s pants and pushing them down. Andrew had to sit up again and remove his shoes and socks. He took off his shirt as well, wanting to be completely naked in front of his lover, the man he wanted above everything else in his life right now. A man who gave him the confidence to display his body again.

Luke took his own shirt and sandals off, throwing all the clothes to the side of the blanket, before pulling Andrew back into his arms. Andrew snuggled there for a moment, content, before lifting his face again, wanting more of those heated, drugging kisses.

Soon kisses weren’t enough and Andrew dragged his pelvis over Luke’suntil their cocks were rubbing on each other.

“No. I want to be inside you when I come.”

  “I want that too.”

Once again Luke sat up, grabbing for his shorts. He took out a tiny bottle of coconut oil then opened his wallet and retrieved a condom. “I hope to hell this works as lube, because it’s all I’ve got.”

“It’s oil and it’s meant to go on people’s skin, so it should be safe, anyway.” Andrew was almost giggling with excitement and the relief that they were about to make love at last. He rolled onto his back and lifted his legs high, holding them over his linked arms.

Luke squirted the oil over his fingers then began massaging Andrew’s entry, but Andrew had no patience. He wanted this so much he couldn’t wait any longer than he absolutely had to. As soon as Luke had two fingers comfortably inside him, he demanded, “I’m ready. Now. Enter me now. I can’t wait any longer.”

Luke pulled Andrew hard against him, and wiggled his sheathed dick just into the entry. Andrew pushed down on him, driving their bodies closer together. Finally Luke’s thick dick slid deep into Andrew’s channel and they were united.

Luke wrapped his arms tightly around Andrew and began to pound inside him, Andrew pushing back with every downward stroke, making Luke slam deeper and deeper into him. Faster and faster they went, panting as their need rose higher with the ferocious pace of their fucking.

Andrew’s cock was jammed between their bodies, sliding up and down with their strokes. Luke grabbed it and pumped him half a dozen times. That was all
it took. Andrew shattered, and come spurted between their bodies, then he felt the heat of Luke’s release into his ass.

Andrew rested his head on Luke’s shoulder, their sweaty bodies glued together with the evidence of their passion. He heard whistling in his ears and looked up. A rocket shot across the sky over the middle of the lake, bursting into red sparkling particles. Still with Luke’s dick snug inside his body and Luke’s arms around him, they turned and watched as green and yellow rockets followed the red one, then Catherine wheels and cherry bombs spun out over the lake in their multicolored brilliance.

Cones, comets, and chrysanthemums, all burst high in the sky, and finally there was a fountain of red, green, purple, and yellow sparks.

“That was pretty impressive,” said Andrew.

“Not half as impressive as we are together. I hope you don’t have anything planned for the next two days because I’d like to move this party into a bed.”

“Being in bed with you sounds perfect to me,” said Andrew.

  And it was.
